Is IRC the future of rallying?

With Suzuki and Subaru pulling out of WRC the manufacturer involvement is reduced to it’s lowest level in recent memory with many asking if modern rallying is dead – not so! The Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) is going from strength to strength with strong manufactuer support and the iconic Monte Carlo Rally and San Remo Rally included on the calendar.

Four factory Peugeots, four factory Fiats, two factory Skodas and semi-factory output from Volkswagen proves series promoters Eurosport, who will screen six hours of live coverage of the Monte Carlo rally alone during the coming year, have got the mix right for competitors and fans alike.

The Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo, the opening round of the 2009 Intercontinental Rally Challenge, runs from January 20-24.

In total 65 crews are due to start with 19 in Super 2000 cars, including reigning IRC champion, Nicolas Vouilloz, as well as Giandomenico Basso, Juho Hanninen, Freddy Loix, Luca Rossetti, Jan Kopecky, Stephane Sarrazin, Didier Auriol and Toni Gardemeister.

Subaru pull the WRC plug!

Subaru have become the latest team to feel the financial pinch in motorsport as it pulled the plug on it’s World Rally Championship program, following Suzuki’s withdrawal earlier this week. The decision is due to the economic climate and leaves Prodrive without it’s key partner for 2009.

Prodrive chairman David Richards, the WRC rights holder, led the team to World Rally Championship titles with Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg. www.sportindustry.biz
